Internal Medicine
An internist is a physician who treats diseases of the heart, blood, kidneys, joints, digestive, respiratory, and vascular systems. These physicians provide long-term and comprehensive care. Because they undergo primary care training in internal medicine, these physicians also address disease prevention, wellness, substance abuse, and mental health.
Internal medicine or general internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of internal diseases. Internists are not the same as general practitioners or family physicians, and one significant distinction is that internists only see adults, whereas family practitioners see both children and adults.
